Battery strappers: who needs them and why

Warehouse and production crews who strap pallets, packages and bundles face two recurring problems. Compressed-air tools need a hose connected to a compressor; the hose limits movement and the compressor consumes energy. Manual tensioners rely on lever force, which varies with the operator. Tension becomes inconsistent, and load stability suffers.

A battery strapper replaces both approaches. A lithium-ion cell drives the motor. You wrap the strap around the load, place both ends in the tool and start the cycle. The tool tensions, seals and cuts the strap. Models in this category offer automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes. No buckles or metal seals are needed on plastic strap because the joint is a friction weld.

Types of battery strappers by strap material

PET and PP strap (9–25 mm)

Most battery strappers in this category handle PET and PP strap. They split into three width bands:

• 9–16 mm: the SIAT VIPER provides three operating modes (automatic, semi-automatic, manual) with a standard tension force of 1,200–2,700 N and weighs 3.9 kg with battery. The NEO2 weighs 2.8 kg without battery and adjusts from 500 to 3200 N.
• 13–19 mm: the ARGON PLUS covers this range with up to 4200 N of tension and up to 500 straps per charge across automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes.
• 19–25 mm: the TES EXTREME handles the widest PET/PP strap in the range with adjustable tension from 400 to 5000 N. It weighs 4.32 kg with battery and seals by friction weld with an adhesion strength of up to 75 %.

All PET/PP tools seal by friction weld. No metal clips or buckles are consumed per strap.

Steel strap (19–32 mm)

The ELECTRA M Series is a tensioner and separate double-notch sealer for 19, 25 or 32 mm steel strap, 0.60 to 1 mm thick. It delivers up to 7500 N of tension at 3 metres per minute and runs on a Makita 18 V / 3 Ah Li-Ion battery that charges in 20 minutes.

Textile and composite strap (16–40 mm)

The ITI 71 is a dedicated tensioner for textile and composite strap. It reaches 11,000 N and ships with two 18 V batteries and a charger. This tool tensions only; sealing is not applicable.

Choosing the right battery strapper

Four criteria narrow the decision:

• Strap material and width. Each tool covers a fixed width range. Match it to the strap you already use. PET and PP suit most pallet loads.
• Tension force. Heavy, tall or unstable pallets demand higher tension. The TES EXTREME reaches 5000 N; for lighter packages a model at 1800 N, such as the GT SMART Plus for 9–16 mm strap, may be enough.
• Automatic vs semi-automatic. Automatic models tension, seal and cut the strap. Semi-automatic and manual modes give you control over individual steps. High throughput favours automatic.
• Battery life and kit contents. Some tools ship with two batteries and a charger, so one charges while the other runs. Cycle counts per charge differ by model, from around 250 to 700 depending on battery capacity.

What else you need

A battery strapper does not work alone. You will also need:

• Strap on a coil (PP, PET, steel or textile) in the width and thickness your tool accepts.
• Seals if you use steel strap with a double-notch sealer.
• A dispenser or cart to hold the coil and feed strap to the operator.
